RE-GEN Project - Young and Emerging Artists

Introducing the next generation of Australian artists

RE-GEN is a week-long creative development workshop for young and emerging artist to develop new Australian plays. Running in parallel with PlayWriting Australia’s National Script Workshop, this new initiative supports emerging theatre-makers (playwrights, directors and dramaturgs) through an intensive creative development process. RE-GEN is designed for young and emerging artists who have graduated from relevant tertiary study in the past two years or who can demonstrate up to 5 years equivalent arts practice experience.

NEW!

RE-GEN: WA

PlayWriting Australia is excited to announce a brand new RE-GEN initiative exclusively for young and emerging artists based in Western Australia to develop dramaturgical skills, create new work and cultivate professional networks nationally.

RE-GEN WA is about creating a bridge between emerging independent work, tertiary study and professional practice, connecting WA-based artists and the national sector.

This opportunity consists of two parts:

-    Artists are invited to a free workshop on Monday 28 May to talk story and structure, network and discuss specific projects.

-    A successful team will then be selected to continue the development of their idea in Sydney, with PlayWriting Australia’s National Script Workshop. RE-GEN WA workshop will support three emerging artists (one playwright, one director and one dramaturg) through an intensive week-long creative development process on a new play working alongside established artists.

FAQs

Q: What if I’m not based in WA?

A: Stay tuned for further RE-GEN announcements coming later in 2012 available to artists nationally.

Q: What counts as 'relevant tertiary study'?

A: This could be a recognised course of study in theatre, drama, performance, acting, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, creative writing, English or similar. Not sure? Email us and check!

Q: Can I submit the same script that I put in for the National Play Festival or Kicking Down the Doors?

A: No, that script would be ineligible for RE-GEN. We're looking for new plays that have not yet been through our assessment processes already.

Q: If we're submitting for Re-GEN as a team, do all three creatives have to be young and emerging?

A: Yes! All the members of your team must be between 18 and 30 and in the first five years of arts practice.

Q: Should the director and dramaturg applying as a team submit a joint script assessment report of the test script?

A: We're leaving this one up to you. The director and dramaturg in a team can each submit their assessment, or one joint report. A note of caution, however, if you are jointly assessing, please ensure you cover both aspects of the script assessment (i.e. directorial and dramaturgical) because your joint report will be competing against applicants who are assessing from only one of those perspectives.
