Dramaturg Exchange
an 8-week dramaturgy fellowship in Germany, including a combination of language course and work experience at a theatre company
In Germany, the birthplace of dramaturgy, the staff position of Dramaturg is a standard within any theatre company. Dramaturgs are central to the processes of programming company repertoire, developing scripts, running development programmes, driving the intellectual and formal development of the company and advising on rehearsal methodologies.
This exchange offers Australian dramaturgs the opportunity to immerse themselves in German dramaturgical practice. For the first four weeks, the successful applicant will divide their time between a Goethe-Institut language course and in-house work with a theatre company. The final four weeks of the exchange will be spent full-time with the theatre company.
By reciprocal arrangement a German dramaturg is invited to research and inform Australian dramaturgical practice during an exchange visit hosted by PlayWriting Australia and including participation in the annual National Play Festival.
This excellent international opportunity is to further the knowledge and practical experience of Australian dramaturgs by exposing them to the working methodologies of dramaturgy in German theatre practice. It offers a unique opportunity to train up Australians in this crucial tool for the successful running of a theatre company by increasing individual skills as well as Australian theatre companies to the utility of this craft practice.
The scholarship includes airfares, accommodation, living expenses.
The dramaturg exchange is a joint initiative of PlayWriting Australia, the Goethe-Institut Australia and the Australia Council for the Arts.
