Awarded ‘…to a talented young playwright …to enable them to further their education in the field of drama, to improve their creative writing and, to improve the general public’s appreciation of Australian drama and playwrights’.

The Max Afford Playwrights’ Award offered by Perpetual and administered by Playwriting Australia was created “to promote interest in Australian drama and to encourage the writing of plays in Australia,to help and give incentive to young writers of plays.” The award is an initiative of the late Thelma May Afford, who in her will established a fund to offer a periodical prize in memory of her husband.

The total value of the biennial award is $30,000 which includes $15,000 cash to the writer and up to $15,000 towards creative development at the Playwriting Australia’s National Script Workshop offering two weeks of intensive script development with a director, dramaturg and a cast of actors. 

To be eligible, submitted scripts must be unproduced, full length of not less than one hour duration and applicants must be aged between 18 and 40 years old. Read the full guidelines

The following information will be requested to complete your application:

  1. Your contact details and demographic information;
  2. A copy of your birth certificate, passport or Australian Citizenship Certificate to indicate date of birth and residency status;
  3. Two copies of your script uploaded, including one ‘clean’ copy;
  4. Play synopsis (max 250 words);
  5. Details of any support the play has received so far;
  6. Optional Development Notes (max 500 words);
  7. Additional Info – your biography and professional credits summary.
