An acclaimed queer New York-based writer theatre, Jen has very bold and unique voice. Her play THE MOORS will be presented by Siren Theatre Co and directed by Kate Gaul for Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Join Jen for a masterclass that leads you through a rigorous series of writing exercises designed to give you a set of tools to channel impulse into action – all through the lens of character.
Jen says ‘The plays that have haunted me long after I walked out of the theatre are plays driven by hungry, ambitious, dangerous, flawed, hopeful, and all-too-human characters. My own characters are often queer and they’re often outsiders; in structure and form, my plays contend with audience expectations around queer characters, extending those expectations to the theatrical container itself, and then overturn both expectation and container. In this way, for me, a “queer play” is as much about form and theatricality as it is about the queer characters who populate it.’
Whatever it is you gravitate toward theatrically, this workshop will use character as the lens through which you think about plot (what your character does), structure (the way an audience encounters what your character does), language (how your character speaks), and theatricality (the rules of the world in which your character lives). Come ready to write.’
