footscray salon: new plays showcase

Playwriting Australia and Footscray Community Arts Centre are holding a public reading of new plays by four local emerging playwrights.

With the goal to inspire a new generation of playwrights; nurturing new voices from the diverse cultural backgrounds and connecting them to the professional theatre sector, the Salon playwright mentoring programbegan as an outreach pilot in Western Sydney in 2009. A professional playwrights’ course, it brings together individuals with existing artistic practice who are interested in extending their playwriting skills through discussions, writing exercises and a mentored development process.

Since 2012, Playwriting Australia partnered with the Footscray Community Arts Centre to run playwriting workshops with local community members and aspiring theatre makers. Following that first stage, four emerging playwrights Tania Canas, Grace Pundyk, Dominic Golding and Simon Miles were all invited to be part of the Footscray Salon in 2013, beginning with eight weeks of meetings with playwright, theatre-maker and academic Jane Montgomery-Griffiths.

They were then matched with established playwrights Van Badham, Tom Holloway, Damien Millar and Melissa Reeves providing them with expert mentorship to guide them towards the completion of a first draft of their new play.

We’ll be presenting excerpts of their new plays in a public reading directed by Chris Mead, Literary Director of Melbourne Theatre Company at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, performed by Nicole Lee, Kane Felsinger, Naomi Rukavina and Leighton Young.
