Dramaturg Exchange
a dramaturgy fellowship in Germany
In Germany, the birthplace of dramaturgy, the staff position of Dramaturg is a standard within any theatre company. Dramaturgs are central to the processes of programming company repertoire, developing scripts, running development programmes, driving the intellectual and formal development of the company and advising on rehearsal methodologies.
This exchange offered Australian dramaturgs the opportunity to immerse themselves in German dramaturgical practice, combining language training and an in-house secondment with a German theatre company.
By reciprocal arrangement German dramaturgs were invited to research and contribute to the development of Australian dramaturgical practice, and their own, during an exchange visit hosted by PlayWriting Australia.
This excellent international opportunity furthered the knowledge and practical experience of Australian dramaturgs by exposing them to the working methodologies of dramaturgy in German theatre practice.
The dramaturg exchange was offered in 2008 and 2009 as a joint initiative of PlayWriting Australia, the Goethe-Institut Australia and the Australia Council for the Arts, and in 2006 through PlayWriting Australia's predecessor, the Australian National Playwrights' Centre.
