Co-Commission
partnering to create new work for production
The standard commissioning fee for a new mainstage play is $10,000 and as small as this figure may seem, it can be daunting for many theatre
companies to invest in a work that may never repay that investment. Similarly daunting can be the process of managing the commission, shepherding
the work towards its completion on time.
PlayWriting Australia can help mitigate the risk and support the process of commissioning by entering into a tripartite co-commissioning agreement
with independent or small-medium scale subsidised producers and an unaffiliated writer. The co-commission agreement offers a contribution towards
the up-front cost of the commission and support in creating a structure for the development of the work.
We invite applications directly from theatre companies by the end of February each year. You are encouraged to discuss your project with the
Artistic Director well in advance of the February deadline. Successful proposals will be offered a co-commission to commence from May.
