National Play Festival Internships

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Rehearsal Room Internships (Melbourne)

Playwriting Australia – National Play Festival 13 – 25 February 2012

PlayWriting Australia is excited to be coming to Melbourne, the City of Literature, for the fifth annual National Play Festival. Each year we open the Festival event to passionate theatre-makers through a number of Rehearsal Room Internships. We invite tertiary level drama students, graduates (or applicants with equivalent practical experience) and emerging writers, directors and dramaturgs interested in new Australian playwriting to apply for this exciting opportunity.

We’re inviting Melbourne-based interns to join the best playwrights, directors, dramaturgs and actors from around the country for the 2012 National Play Festival. You’ll be in the room, observing the script development and rehearsal processes to get the work to the stage. You’ll be responsible for keeping the rehearsal room running smoothly, assisting the director, dramaturg and cast with day to day set-up and keeping track of the scripts.

PlayWriting Australia is seeking enthusiastic Rehearsal Room interns looking to further their knowledge and understanding of a rehearsal and script development process in the context of Australian theatre. We seek interns who are passionate about theatre, have a strong desire to engage with new playwriting, and possess great people skills.

These internships will focus on managing (with assistance) the smooth running of the rehearsal room and presentation process. You will be assigned a rehearsal room to manage, facilitating the process with the director, dramaturg and acting ensemble on one or more scripts. The Play Festival runs from 20 to 25 February 2012 at Malthouse Theatre, with rehearsals beginning on 13 February. You will be working closely with our Event Producer, Kristy Austin, our Company Stage Manager and the PlayWriting Australia team in the running of the National Play Festival to ensure the success of the event.

About PlayWriting Australia and the National Play Festival

PlayWriting Australia is the national peak body for playwrights, script development and industry engagement. Our mission is to identify and support talented playwrights, develop their scripts and engage with theatre companies to see their work on stages here in Australia and overseas. We connect talent with opportunity.

To this end, every year, we hold a national celebration of playwriting. We find the brightest, shiniest new plays and invite audiences, theatre companies and international producers to experience these fresh Australian voices and stories. The National Play Festival is a whirlwind of new play readings, forums, industry sessions and special presentations.

In 2012 National Play Festival will travel to Melbourne for the first time in the event’s history. Melbourne is a perfect host for the National Play Festival: a UNESCO City of Literature and home to an enormously diverse arts community; a city internationally renowned as the cultural heart of Australia.
